Three steps to a steady click

  1. 1

    Add it to Chrome

One click on the Chrome Web Store. No account, nothing to set up.

  2. 2

    Set the tempo

Type the BPM, drag the fader, hold − or +, pick a tempo mark, or tap the beat with TAP.

  3. 3

    Press play

Press play or Space. The pendulum swings, the step lights count the bar and the downbeat is accented.

Made for practice

8th

Guitar practice

Eighth notes under the click tighten strumming, picking and chord changes. Raise the BPM a few steps at a time.

3/4

Piano practice

Count a waltz in 3/4 or a ballad in 6/8, keep the left hand steady and work through scales and sight-reading.

16th

Drum practice

Sixteenths show where every note of a rudiment or a fill lands. The Hi-hat sound feels close to the kit.

What it does

  • 20 to 300 BPM

Type the number, drag the fader or hold − and + to move fast. The Italian tempo name follows along.

  • Tap tempo

Tap the beat of a song with TAP or the T key. It averages your last eight taps and starts over after a two-second pause.

  • Four time signatures

2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8. The downbeat has a higher, brighter tone, so the one is easy to find.

  • Subdivisions

Quarter notes, eighths, triplets and sixteenths, for shuffle, swing and fast passages.

  • Click sounds

Click, Wood, Beep, Digital and Hi-hat, each with its own accent, plus a volume fader.

  • Tempo marks

Grave to Prestissimo in one drop-down: Largo 50, Andante 84, Allegretto 120, Presto 188.

How to find the BPM of a song

Play the song and hit TAP, or press T, on every beat. After two taps the screen shows a BPM. Keep tapping: it averages your last eight taps, so one early or late tap barely moves the number.

Pause for two seconds and the next tap starts a fresh count. Then press play: the click runs at the tempo you tapped, and − and + nudge it by one BPM if the song drifts.

The clicks are scheduled ahead on the browser's audio clock rather than a plain timer, so the beat holds steady while the popup is open.

Private by design

  • No account

Nothing to sign up for, nothing to log in to.

  • No tracking

No ads, no analytics, no telemetry.

  • One permission

Storage, to remember your BPM, meter, subdivision, sound and volume. It can't read the pages you visit.

Questions

Is this online metronome free?

Yes. No account, no ads, no paid version. Add it from the Chrome Web Store and it is ready.

How do I find the BPM of a song?

Play the song and hit TAP (or press T) on each beat. The screen shows the average of your last eight taps; pause for two seconds to start over.

Does it work offline?

Yes. The clicks are generated inside the extension, so nothing loads from the internet once it is installed.

Does it keep playing when I click on the page?

No. It plays while the popup is open, and Chrome closes a popup when you click outside it. Keep it open while you play and open it again to carry on.

Which time signatures and subdivisions does it have?

2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8, each with an accented downbeat. Subdivisions: quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets and sixteenth notes.

Can I practise without sound?

Yes. Turn the volume down and follow the pendulum and the step lights, one light per beat of the bar.

Does it work in Edge, Brave or Opera?

Most Chromium browsers install extensions from the Chrome Web Store, including Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi. Firefox, Safari and phones are not supported.

Set the tempo. Press play.
